Best Ripple (XRP) Wallets

Let's dive into some of the wallets we recommend for storing XRP

Read each entry carefully to find out which is best for your uses.

TREZOR and Ledger Nano X are the two best hardware wallets for cryptocurrency. Unfortunately, right now, only the Nano X supports storing XRP.

The Nano X is made by Ledger, a Bitcoin security company based in France. They have been creating cryptocurrency hardware wallets since 2014.

Who should get a Nano X?

If you are buying XRP that you plan to hold for a while, then the Ledger Nano X is probably the easiest way to securely store your XRP for a long period of time.

When digital currency is stored on online computers, it can easily be obtained by malware or hackers. The Nano X stores your XRP offline and away from hackers or malware. The Nano X stores your private keys which control your XRP in its secure offline environment.

One other benefit of the Ledger Nano X is that it supports more coins and cryptos than any other hardware wallet.

Toast Wallet makes it easy to send, receive and store XRP on your Android phone.

You can check the Toast Wallet website for more info.

Best Ripple iOS Wallets

Like Android, Toast Wallet is the best available wallet for XRP on iOS.

Its source code is also open source.

Best Ripple Desktop Wallets

Toast Wallet is also available on desktop for Mac, Windows and Linux. You can download the application from the Toast Wallet website.

Toast Wallet Review (Desktop)

Toast wallet is fairly simple to use. We’ll walk you through how to setup the desktop app and start receiving Ripple.

Before you start, just note that Toast is okay to use for small amounts but larger amounts of XRP should be securely stored on a hardware wallet like the Ledger Nano S.

Toast is only a Ripple wallet and does not support other coins.

Here is out to start setting up Toast:

Once downloaded, you’ll be asked to agree to the terms and conditions of the wallet:

You’ll then be asked to set a pin code and confirm on the next page. This is so if someone has access to your computer it will be hard for them to see your balance or access your wallet.

Then you’ll have to set a passphrase to encrypt your wallet:

Next you’ll receive your recovery phrase:

Toast will ask you to make a small donation to help fund their wallet development. It’s optional, so you can click “Not at this time” if you do not want to donate:

Next, hit “Add account” to create your first Ripple address:

Click “Generate new address”, since you’ll be creating your first Ripple address:

You can now see your first address and give it a label to help remember what the address was used for. Note, you’ll have to hold at least 20 XRP in any address in order to send. This is put pin place by Ripple in order to prevent spam.

Next you’ll be asked to make a backup of your wallet, make sure to keep it in a safe place:

You’ll be shown the backup of your wallet:

You can now see that my example wallet ‘Toast Review’ shows up after clicking the home button at the bottom.

Once I click on the wallet it will show me the receiving address. Once you get to this page it’s easy to send your XRP address to anyone and start receiving XRP!

Ripple Paper Wallet

We did some research and the only Ripple paper wallet generator we found was ripplepaperwallet.com.

There is a glaring issue with this site:

It does not display its source code on the website.

This is very dangerous because it could mean the website is just generating wallets that it stores the private keys to. This means that at any point in the future the site could steal the Ripple sent to wallets generated by the site.

At this point in time, it’s best to stay away from this wallet.

Gatehub for Ripple

Gatehub is often recommended as one of the best ways to store Ripple online.

However, there are a few issues with the Gatehub wallet.

The main issue with Gatehub is that it is a web wallet. Web wallets are less secure than hardware wallets, and even less secure than desktop wallets or mobile wallets.

Blockchain.info is the most popular Bitcoin web wallet. The amount of bugs and loss of funds with this wallet are too many to count. And Gatehub users are likely to run into the same issues that blockchain.info users ran into.

Chapter 2

How to Add XRP to Your Ripple Wallet

Now that you have chosen a wallet, let's transfer some XRP into it.

In this brief walkthrough, we will show you how to add funds to your Ripple wallet

For you to add funds to your Ripple Wallet, you will need to find an exchange to buy Ripple (XRP) from, then transfer it to your Wallet. Many XRP Wallets have exchanges native to them (as seen above), however, these exchanges generally charge very high fees for the convenience, so it’s generally better to use a dedicated exchange, like Kraken or Coinmama.

You’ll need to choose an exchange that services your country and/or state. You can find a full list of exchanges sorted by country and preffered payment method on our exchange finder or you can see the most popular exchanges below:

  • Coinbase
    • High liquidity and buying limits
    • Easy way for newcomers to get bitcoins
    • 'Instant Buy' option available with debit card
  • Kraken
    • Great liquidity and low fees
    • Supports most countries
    • Trusted exchange, started in 2011

After you have bought your crypto, you’ll need to send it to your ripple wallet.

Chapter 3

XRP Wallet Frequently Asked Questions

Many of you may still have lots of questions about XRP wallets and how to keep your Monero secure.

Odds are we have answered almost any question you could think of below.

  • Our Top Picks
  • Gatehub for Ripple

Is it safe to store Ripple on an iPhone or Android phone?

It is probably fine for short periods, but if you are serious about securing your XRP then it is worth it to pick up a hardware wallet.

Is there a Ripple web wallet?

Gatehub is often recommended as a Ripple web wallet. However, since many Bitcoin users have lost money when using web wallets, we’re not going to cover that wallet here.

What is Ripple’s actual name?

Ripple recently changed its branding. It used to be known as Ripple but now only goes by XRP. The ticker still stayed the same as $XRP.

When will TREZOR support Ripple?

TREZOR has not announced any plans to support Ripple. However, since a lot of Ripple users are buying Ledger wallets, it seems almost certain that TREZOR will be forced to add support for Ripple soon.

Why do I need 20 XRP minimum in my wallet?

Ripple added the 20 XRP minimum in order to prevent network spam. This ensures that in order to transact on the network a wallet must have this 20 XRP balance. Ripple’s cryptographer, David Schwartz, explains here:

Unlike a bitcoin receiving address, a funded Ripple wallet is a real thing on the ledger that has properties. This has advantages and disadvantages, but one of the disadvantages is that there’s a cost associated with having one. To cover the costs imposed on the network, the XRP Ledger has a “base reserve” that is XRP that is not spendable or transferrable. You can use the reserve to pay transaction fees and, if the reserve drops, you can transfer out XRP to the new reserve level.

Why Can’t I Just Use my Exchange as a Wallet?

This is a big NO!

When you use an exchange as a wallet, you leave open a wide range of ways to lose your money.

Your account can get hacked very easily especially if you don’t have a strong password or 2-factor authentication.

The exchange itself could also get hacked. Let’s say an exchange holds $100,000,000 worth of cryptocurrency and gets hacked. The hacker runs away with $10,000,000; 10% of the exchange’s money.

Then the most likely case is that you as a user will have 10% of your balance removed. The exchange is very likely to pass on its loss to you.

Storing your coins on a wallet you control eliminates this risk for you.

What is Toast Wallet?

There are various cryptocurrency wallets created for specific coins and tokens. And the Toast Wallet is designed specifically for use with XRP (also known as Ripple) tokens.

It’s a FREE open source wallet which is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. It’s owned by StarStone Limited, a software start-up based in Dunedin, New Zealand.

One important aspect to be aware of is that there is a 20 XRP reserve requirement for all accounts on the Ripple network. This means that you must send a minimum of 20 XRP to your Toast wallet to activate it. YOU WILL NOT get these funds back unless the network lowers the reserve requirements.

How to Use Toast Wallet

Step 1: Download the Toast Wallet from https://toastwallet.com. Always make sure the website is shown as “Secure” before downloading anything onto a device and that you’re on the official website listed above.

Step 2: Once you open the application, you will be prompted to enter a 6 digit pin. Following this you will be asked to set a passphrase which is used to encrypt your wallet. This must be entered when you want to send XRP. Note: This should not be shared with anyone and should be a strong password that is stored securely.

Step 3: IMPORTANT: A six word recovery phrase will be generated that you should write down and store in a safe location. If you should ever happen to forget your passphrase, the recovery phrase is used to gain access to your XRP. Similar to your passphrase, you should never share the recovery phrase with anyone.

Note: The recovery phrase is useless without a wallet backup. You must backup your wallet from the settings menu when you finish generating an address. This is vital if you lose the device on which you use your Toast wallet (EG. if you lose your laptop on which your Toast wallet data is stored.)

Step 4/metatrader-4-fur-mac-download.html. : A generated account address is created and you will be prompted to import this into your wallet.

Step 5: Finally, you can send the required 20 XRP minimum to your Ripple address to activate your wallet. If you send less than this, the transaction will not be processed and your XRP will be returned to the originating address.

How to send to Toast Wallet

It’s very simple to send XRP to your Toast wallet. All you need is your Ripple address which can be found in your wallet.

If you are sending funds from an exchange, you will be asked for a destination tag. If you’re moving XRP to your own address you should input the destination tag as “0”. This tag is used by businesses to identify their customers, so if you’re not sending to a business, you can leave it blank or 0.

What about if you’re sending XRP from your Toast Wallet to an exchange? In this case you will need to enter a destination tag to allow the exchange to recognise you. If you forget to do this, you must first locate the transaction by entering the Ripple address you sent from. You can do this here: RPC Tool. Then you must copy the transaction details and send these to the exchange to explain what happened (ie you didn’t enter a destination tag.) They should then initiate a refund back to your Toast Wallet.

Is Toast Wallet Safe?

Cryptocurrency is all about trust and using a wallet that keeps your XRP safe is absolutely paramount. To date, we have not come across any concerns in regards to the security of Toast.

The Toast Wallet is open source, and you can publicly view the full code here: https://github.com/ToastWallet/core.

This won’t mean much to the average Joe, but it allows those who are more technically adept to review and challenge the code.

Open source allows anyone to view the code. Even hackers. But opening up public access is generally seen as a positive move, as it allows others to verify the quality of the code and help identify vulnerabilities which might be exposed.

The Toast Wallet is certainly viewed as secure within the Ripple community. When you are not actively sending XRP your Ripple secret is heavily encrypted.

Despite this, Toast is a hot wallet for XRP (connected to the internet.) For large holdings you should always consider another solution such as a hardware wallet like Ledger Nano or Trezor.

Toast wallet keeps your data on your device and does not send information to its servers. This is useful for security purposes, but it means that if you lose your phrase or backup then your wallet cannot be retrieved. Therefore ALWAYS make backups and store these in safe, preferably offline, locations.

Fees and Speed

Toast wallet is free and there are no fees. However as noted previously, there is a 20 XRP minimum reserve which cannot be withdrawn. This is a feature of the Ripple network for the purposes of limiting transaction spam.

In terms of speed, Toast wallet transactions are generally fast. However like most applications, congestion can occur when many users are trying to process transactions at the same time.

Toast Wallet Review

In summary:

  • The Toast Wallet is seen as being one of the best Ripple wallets and is a trusted means of securely storing your XRP tokens.
  • A minimum reserve of 20 XRP is required to activate your wallet. This will not be refunded for as long as the Ripple network requires this reserve.
  • It’s a free XRP wallet.
  • Make sure to keep your passphrase and recovery phrase safe, and create a backup of your wallet. The backup is required if you lose the device that Toast is on – for example if you’re using the iOS app and lose your phone. Wallet data is not shared with the server.
  • The code is open source which helps developers to verify the quality of the code.
  • It can be used on a number of different platforms and is a great solution if you want a Ripple desktop wallet.
